program notes
This 13 minutes long work for strings called TRISTITIA has been completed on Good Friday, April 13, 2001. It is dedicated to my dear friend, the American composer Jeffery Cotton. Jeffery passed away suddenly on his on monday morning, February 4, 2013. He was on his way to work on a subway platform in Philadelphia. The work has been premiered by Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra and the conductor Scott Yoo on april 19, 2003 in Boston, Massachusetts (New England Conservatory, Jordan Hall).

The proportions of the durations of the single sections in TRISTITIA are constructed after the GOLDEN RULE (Fibounacci - 2 - 3 - 5 - 8 - 13 ...)

a) bar 001 – 041 (slow) = 3 min.

b) bar 042 – 099 (quick) = 2 min.

c) bar 100 – 126 (slow) = 2 min.

d) bar 127 – 218 (quick) = 3 min.

e) bar 219 – 262 (slow) = 3 min.

a) + b) + c) + d) + e) = 5 sections = the whole work = 13 min.

a) + c) + e) = 3 sections slow = 8 min.

b) + d) = 2 sections quick = 5 min.
